Tomorrowland Spaceman: My Dream Job

S-spacecouple
I’ve finally realized what I want to be when I grow up, and it’s gonna be a challenge: I want to be the Spaceman in Disneyalnd’s Tomorrowland circa 1957. That guy had everything: cool outfit, cool ride (a rocketship called the TWA Moonliner...how cool is that?) a sexy space WOMAN to hang around with

He’s got such a cool, classic sci-fi spacesuit, silver lamé with padded rolls and some sort of communications device on his belt, and an awesome helmet with the antenna. The spaceman’s role seems to be ambassadorial (Hey, space is great folks, you should try it!) although I think he had to shill for Kaiser Aluminum (the sponsors of the Hall of Fame from 1955-1960).

At the end of a tough day doing whatever he did the Tomorrowland Spaceman even had a Space Bar to go to.

Who did he talk to on that communicator belt? Walt Disney? Guss Grissom? JFK? I love the optimism of early Tomorrowland. A post-war, pre-Nam American where anything was possible.

This shot below is amazing. Surrounded by Cub Scouts, looking very fligh-ready. Telling the boys to drink Ovaltine and study calculous and they can be Spacemen too.

Here he is hanging out with your aunts and grandmother, posing nonchalantly like David Niven. The spacesuit is more streamlined, no rolled sleeves, communicator belt or even gloves. Space girl’s outfit is missing the cape and frilly skirt previous girlstronauts wore.
